What You Should Know Before Buying a Set of Tires

If you’re in need of new tires, you will be glad to know that the Department of Transportation has mandated tire manufacturers meet a rating system. It’s called the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) system. Perhaps you thought that the tire manufacturer or even the car manufacturer can set their own standards, and that simply is not the case. Look for the UTQG marking embedded on the sidewall of the tires that you’re interested in purchasing.

Also, remember the below information in order to choose the correct tire:

  • The letter "P" means passenger tire.
  • Tread width is a three digit number determined in milliliters.
  • Speed rating determines the maximum driving speed of the tire (H, T, W, Z…Etc.)
  • The wheel diameter digit is in inches for one size that fits the tire.
  • The letter "R" means it is a radial tire.
